One of my all-time favorite love poems

I don’t read poetry books as often as I’d like to as I’m finding myself torn between my ever-growing fiction TBR pile (lately even non-fiction), my writing, and all the other parts of my life. But I do have a few favorite poems I go back to from time to time. And one of them is Maya Angelou’s When You Come By. It is heartbreaking, I won’t lie. But also so inspiring. Like any good poem, it is up for interpretation and its meaning to me might not be its meaning to you, but that’s alright. I hope you enjoy it!

When You Come By

by Maya Angelou

When you come to me, unbidden,
Beckoning me
To long-ago rooms,
Where memories lie.

Offering me, as to a child, an attic,
Gatherings of days too few.
Baubles of stolen kisses.
Trinkets of borrowed loves.
Trunks of secret words,

I CRY.

Until next time!

Keep Believing in Magic,
